System Marathon
The Marathon System is a design with roller-guided energy chains, designed for long travel distances. The roller guidance completely eliminates sliding friction between the upper and lower run, requiring only the lower rolling friction to be overcome. This results in a reduction of friction-related travel forces by up to 90% and minimizes abrasion and wear. Furthermore, alternating flexure of the cables and the energy chain is prevented, and force is applied parallel to the chain's longitudinal direction. As a result, the Marathon System has an extended lifespan and operational reliability.
Advantages
The sliding friction between the upper and lower run is eliminated, only the lower rolling friction needs to be overcome.
Friction-related travel forces can be reduced by up to 90%, and there are no increased starting moments.
Force is applied parallel to the chain's longitudinal direction, and there are no alternating flexures of the cables and the energy chain.
Abrasion and wear are minimized.
The system has an increased lifespan and operational reliability.
One advantage of the Marathon System is that, due to the roller guidance of the energy chain, it achieves a reduction of friction-related travel forces of up to 90%, resulting in energy savings and efficiency.
- This reduction in friction-related travel forces by up to 90% and the associated energy savings and efficiency.
- The minimization of abrasion and wear, which can contribute to an extended lifespan and operational reliability.
- The prevention of alternating flexure of the cables and the energy chain, which may be crucial for the reliable functionality of the system.
- The parallel force application at the moving carrier, which can ensure a smooth and precise travel motion.
Furthermore, abrasion and wear reduction contribute to an extended lifespan and operational reliability of the system. The parallel force application and prevention of alternating flexure ensure a smooth and precise motion.
EKD Systems' Marathon System in the Port of Dubai
In 2017, EKD Systems was awarded a contract by DP World to replace an existing sliding energy chain system on a rubber-tired gantry crane (RTG134) at the DP World Container Terminal in the Port of Dubai with the Marathon system.
The original system, with a channel length of 23.5 meters and a travel distance of 19.5 meters, had become non-functional due to wear and needed an urgent replacement.
Due to the EKD Systems Marathon System on a rubber-tired gantry crane for DP World, the project was successfully executed. It was a remarkable success and an example of technical excellence. With this new system in place, the gantry crane will now operate smoothly and efficiently, contributing to the facilitation of container traffic in the Port of Dubai.

EKD Systems for PLTU Barru in Indonesia
The task of the Marathon System was to ensure a stable energy supply for coal transport at our customer PLTU Barru. The primary focus was on the efficient unloading of coal from ships through the optimization of ship unloaders.
